The cartilage matrix

Cartilage matrix is synthesized, degraded, organized and maintained by a sparse population of chondrocytes, which make up 0.5 - 2% of the total cartilage volume. These cells are protected from the potentially damaging influence of mechanical forces by the extracellular matrix they produce. The 2 major constituents of cartilage extracellular are collagen type II and the proteoglycan aggrecan.
